Radio amateurs, more commonly known as “hams”, are a unique breed. They are passionate about their hobby and love nothing more than sharing their knowledge and skills with others.
For many hams, amateur radio is a way of life. They enjoy the camaraderie of talking to other operators around the world and take great pride in being able to communicate using only simple radios and antennas.
Despite the technological advances that have been made over the years, ham radio is still very popular. There are now more than 700,000 licensed amateur radio operators in the United States alone, and the number is growing every day.
So what is it that makes ham radio so appealing? In my opinion, there are a few key reasons.
First, ham radio is a great way to stay connected with the world. With amateur radio, you can talk to people from all walks of life, in countries all over the globe. You never know who you might meet or what interesting conversation you might have.
Second, ham radio is a great way to learn about electronics and communication technology. If you’re interested in learning more about how radios work, or how to build your own antenna, then ham radio is the perfect hobby for you.
Third, ham radio is a great way to promote emergency preparedness. In times of disaster, Amateur Radio Service (ARS) volunteers are often some of the first on the scene, providing critical communication support to first responders and relief organizations.
